TURA/JOWAI: Together with the rest of the world, “World Blood Donor’s Day” was observed at District Auditorium, Tura on Friday where Chief Adviser to the Chief Minister and MLA North Tura Thomas A Sangma attended the programme chief guest with Chief Executive Member, GHADC, Dipul R Marak as the guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Thomas A Sangma said that donating blood and saving the life of a person in need gives a different kind of satisfaction and happiness to the donor. He also shared his past experience of donating blood way back in 2003 elections when a poll party was ambush while returning and needed blood immediately, it was then he and the present chief minister who donated their blood for the injured officer.
Stressing on the importance of voluntary blood donation, he urged everyone to sensitise the people about the stigma that people believe that giving blood would make them weak, but instead donating blood makes people strong and physically healthy provided they take care of the health.
While addressing the gathering, Dipul R Marak expressed his acknowledgment for blood donors and saving the life of those in needs and said that only a person who has been saved by a donor will understand the value and preciousness of blood donor.
Certificates were also distributed to the winners of debate, drawing and painting competition which was held earlier for the occasion.
Blood donors felicitated
The World Blood Donor Day was organised at Jowai Civil Hospital Blood Bank, Panaliar in West Jaintia Hills in collaboration with Meghalaya Aids Control Society and Meghalaya State Blood Transfusion Council, Shillong in the conference on the theme “Save Blood for All”.
Speaking as chief guest, Additional Deputy Commissioner B.J Kharshandi lauded all the voluntary blood donors for their life saving gift to those in need of blood transfusion.
He said this noble act of blood contribution by the donors is truly commendable. Kharshandi encouraged all and especially the young citizens to come forward and donate blood and save life.
Dr. Rita Pohrmen, Superintendent of Jowai Civil Hospital Ialong, thanked the organisations and the donors for generously donating blood to save and support life especially in their critical times. She also highlighted on the importance of blood donation. Special appreciation was given to Ricky Dan for his voluntary blood donation. In a span of four years he had voluntarily donated his blood 11 times and has set an example for others.
