SHILLONG: Following the closure of the Swiggy services by Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) due to the want of trade license, the Executive member in charge of Trade,  Paul Lyngdoh has asserted that the firms and companies who want to operate here must possess trade license

“Just because you employ local boys and girls, you cannot short-circuit the entire process and they must come through the front door to operate here,” he said.

According to Lyngdoh, if the firms come to the council with proper application for operating here, the Council will consider the case based on its merits.
It may be mentioned that most of the delivery boys of Swiggy are local youths who were earning a livelihood and sudden closure of the service has affected after their livelihood.

There are, however, opinions that KHADC should not have been so harsh since there is a question of livelihood of the local boys and KHADC should have had given them fixed timeline to process their papers related to procurement of trade license before finally closing down their services in Shillong.

Meanwhile, Opposition Chief whip and Congress leader, PT Sawkmie have asked the State Government to take action against Swiggy and Rapido bike services for operating in Meghalaya without the permission of the Government.

Lamenting that the laws in Meghalaya are weak, he added that the Government must take action against the companies or else the laws of Meghalaya would become a laughing stock in the country

He also said that people from outside were running schools, resorts and Hotels in the state without permission of the Government even as he added that the Chief Minister should direct all the Deputy Commissioners to take action against companies who operate in Meghalaya without the permission of the Government.
