TURA: The opposition to the transfer of several government officials in North Garo Hills has gained momentum with combined organizations from the region on Tuesday holding a public rally cum poster campaign to express their resentment over the move.

Members of several organizations from the region including the A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), the local unit of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and others along with presidents and secretaries of VECs, Nokmas and laskers and the general public while holding placards shouted slogans, demanding a halt to the transfers and that stay order is given to the concerned officials to complete their term.

The organizations in particular are opposing the transfer of Kharkutta C&RD Block BDO, P R Marak, who received the transfer order on June 3 and another MCS Officer from Resubelpara, P K Boro who is set to be transferred to Mawkhyrwat in Khasi Hills.

“Their services are still needed in their current place of postings for transparency and better development of North Garo Hills. We along with the general public demand that stay orders are given to them or we will continue to stand firmly against the move,” Ratcha Momin, the Secretary of AHAM said.

Interestingly, opposition to the transfer of an official was also witnessed on the same day at Williamnagar in neighbouring East Garo Hills district with several well known organizations from the district meeting Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe and submitting a memorandum against the move.Organizations like the GSU, FKJGP, ASWA, GSMC, AGUU and ICFS while terming the proposed transfer of current Superintendent of Police (SP), R T G Momin as political in nature had opposed it. The organizations had also threatened to agitate if the government failed to act on their demand.
