SHILLONG: Chief Minister and national president of National People’s Party Conrad Sangma has endorsed the idea of ” one nation, one election” saying it will be good for the country but it needs to be discussed with the stakeholders before taking a call on it.
The chief minister, who on Wednesday attended a meeting of presidents of all political parties convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the concept in New Delhi, said that the idea is good as it will cut down on a lot of expenditure and also improve the efficiency of elections.
Admitting that there are challenges to the idea, Sangma said consultations must be held on the subject with the stakeholders. “The prime minister assured that this is just a beginning and consultations will take place at all levels,” he said.
The meeting also discussed about improving productivity of the parliament and MPs and celebration of 75th Independence Day of India and of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Talking about the productivity of MPs, he said that political parties need to realise and inculcate in them a habit of participation in debates rather than just creating noise in parliament.
During the meeting, Sangma said that in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, there is never a situation of any ruckus and members involve in healthy debates that are productive.
“We don’t stall proceedings of the House and Meghalaya can show an example to the rest of the country and parliament,” he said.
He also said that the MPs should be given office and more manpower so that they can be more productive.
