SHILLONG: AICC general secretary and in charge of Northeastern states Luizinho Faleiro on Thursday warned that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill sword was hanging over the heads of the people of the region with the BJP determined to bring back the contentious bill in Parliament soon.
Faleiro, who is on a two-day visit here, said that the Congress apart from bringing development to the region had tried to protect and preserve the unique identity and culture of its people.
“We gave them special status but today their special status, identity and culture are gone and now the Centre is forcing CAB on them,” he said wondering if the elected representatives understood what was in store for the people of the North East.
Asked if CAB would help the Congress get the support of regional parties, he said that in Tripura he has signed an MoU with civil societies and local parties as they have realised that it is only the Congress which can protect and preserve their identity. “We are committed to maintain and protect the unique identify and culture of the NE people,” he said.
