SHILLONG/NONGPOH/NONGSTOIN/TURA: International Yoga Day was observed across the state on Friday.
In Shillong, various institutions and government offices took part.
The 5th International Yoga Day was observed by the Directorate of AYUSH, Government of Meghalaya, under the theme ‘Yoga for Heart’ on Friday at the premises of Civil Hospital in the city.
Health and Family Welfare Minister, AL Hek graced the programme as chief guest.
Army Public School (APS) observed the Day on Friday on its premises with enthusiasm.
The Day was celebrated by Assam Rifles in the city where the programme was attended by Central Armed Police Forces. More than 1,000 soldiers of Assam Rifles, BSF, CISF and CRPF attended the session along with their family members.
The 9th UN Contingent of Assam Rifles known as the India Formed Police Unit (IFPU) also observed International Yoga Day at Log Base Camp, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. UN police officials from UK, Canada, Nigeria and FPU officials from Senegal and Nepal FPUs took part.
The BSF also observed the Day at Red Ground, BSF Mawpat and also at various BOPs under its command on Friday. Inspector General of BSF Kuldeep Saini inaugurated the function.
At EAC Headquarters, Upper Shillong, the event was inaugurated by Air Vice Marshal Pawan Mohey, Senior Officer-in-charge Administration, EAC.
IIM Shillong organised a three-day workshop titled ‘Yoga for All’ on Friday.
India Tourism Shillong and Union Ministry of Tourism also observed the Day. Governor Tathagata Roy and the chairman of Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture, BB Dutta, were the chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
The Bureau of Outreach and Communication (BOC), Regional Office, Meghalaya and Tripura and the Field Outreach Bureau, Nongstoin, jointly organised a one-day special outreach programme on International Day of Yoga at BK Bajoria School on Friday.
At Kendriya Vidyalaya Umroi Cantonment, the event commenced with the enunciation of ‘Om’ and the importance of yoga was underlined.
Metallica – Sargam sports & Cultural Club, Shillong in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, East Khasi Hills, Patanjali Yog Samiti, Meghandini Mahila Samiti and Bharat Swabhiman Trust observed International Yoga Day.
In NEHU, SK Srivastava, Vice-Chancellor of NEHU was the chief guest while Umesh Changotia, Patanjali Yoga Kendra, Shillong, was the guest of honour.
A group of yoga teachers from the Art of Living, Shillong Kendra, led by Mala Sinha were also present.
The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy, Shillong observed the Day at its campus in Mawdiangdiang.
The members of Wards’ Lake and the morning walkers’ team also observed the Day.
At Women’s College Higher Secondary, the students took part in a lecture-cum-demonstration by Vikas Singh Samant, an Art of Living teacher of Shillong.
The Lama Villa Yoga Health Benefits Club observed the Day at Lama Villa Community Hall.
At Ramakrishna Mission premises in Laitumkhrah, around 50 beneficiary students of Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa, integrated child development project initiated by Ramakrishna Mission, participated in the yoga camp.
Sarojini Naidu Girls Upper Primary/Secondary School also observed Yoga Day on the school premises.
Yoga exercise was carried out in all the educational centres of SPARK, with more than 250 children benefiting from it.
In West Khasi Hills, the office of the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) conducted a yoga exercise in each Anganwadi centre of the district. Around 585 Anganwadi centres in West Khasi Hills participated.
The CDPO of Nongstoin, M Nongkhlaw informed that children as young as 3 years participated in the exercise.
The office of the Nehru Yuva Kendra, Nongpoh, organised the ‘District Level Yoga Exercise for Peace and Harmony’ in collaboration with the Ri Bhoi College, where around 300 students of the institution took part in the yoga demonstration.
The Day was also observed on the theme ‘Yoga for Heart’ at DC Park, Tura, where West Garo Hills DC Ram Singh graced the occasion as the chief guest. The programme was organised by District Medical and Health Office, Tura.
