SHILLONG: Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said he had already apprised the Prime Minister and Union Agriculture Minister of the issue of Central Agriculture University (CAU).
While the state government acquired land for a university at Kyrdemkulai, Ri Bhoi, what it got instead was only a college under the under CAU, Imphal.
Lyngdoh said on Saturday that he will oppose tooth and nail any move to allot only a college and not a university. “We want clarity from the Centre regarding the matter”, he said.
He reiterated that the matter will be followed up at the central level.
Earlier, the issue was raised in the Assembly by Independent legislator SK Sunn  and it was revealed that instead of a university, Meghalaya was allotted only a college of agriculture.
Later, a city-based resident Arju Dkhar also filed an RTI query regarding the matter and the reply has also revealed the actual position.
Pressure is already mounting on the state government to ensure that the university is established in Ri Bhoi at the earliest as 200 acres of land is available in Kyrdemkulai.
