Swachh honour for WKH man

GUWAHATI: Medarius Langrin from Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills has been selected for the Special Recognition award in the individual households’ category of the month-long Swachh Sundar Shauchalaya campaign organised across the country in January this year.

Langrin, who belongs to Mawlait, is the only individual from the Northeast to be chosen for the honour among 15 awardees in the category.

Apart from Meghalaya, nine others from eight states, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat, Chhatisgarh and Rajasthan, will receive the Special Recognition Award.   

Besides, five persons from Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have been chosen winners in the category, an official statement said.

In this regard, the Swachh Mahotsav 2019 will be held with an event  at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on June 24where the winners of the campaign will be awarded by Jal Shakti minister, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

Among the states, Jharkhand, Telangana and Maharashtra have been chosen winners while among Union Territories, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli have bagged top honours.

In a communiqué to the states, the department of drinking water and sanitation (Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin) under Jal Shakti ministry appreciated the households, districts, states and Union Territories across the country for participating in the contest with great enthusiasm and bolstering the sanitation revolution in India.

The Swacch Sundar Shauchalaya campaign was organised as an opportunity to paint toilets and give them a facelift across rural India in order to re-intensify the Swacch Bharat Jan Andolan. The campaign garnered over 1.34 crore participation.
