Plane makes emergency landing due to disruptive passenger
BHUBANESWAR: A Guwahati-bound flight from Hyderabad made an emergency landing at the Biju Patnaik International Airport here on Sunday after a passenger allegedly indulged in unruly behaviour on board. The IndiGo flight from Hyderabad to Guwahati landed here after it was diverted under emergency protocol. The 20-year-old passenger was deplaned and handed over to the airport police, officials at the airport said. The passengers on board were scared after the man created a ruckus and even tried to open a door of the aircraft, a police officer said, adding, the man had violated safety norms despite repeated warnings. The man was taken to the Capital Hospital here after he was deplaned, the police officer said. The flight took off for Guwahati after offloading the passenger, an official at the airport said. (PTI)
81 ex-prisoners in Telengana secure jobs in various companies
Hyderabad: As many as 81 released prisoners from across Telangana have been placed in various jobs including, marketing executive and technicians with salaries ranging from Rs 10,000 to 30,000, through the efforts of state Prisons department. They were part of 129 released prisoners who attended the ‘Job Mela-2019’ organised by the department Saturday, in which eight companies took part. The others landed jobs as drivers, house-keeping, data entry operators, electricians, helpers and others, a prisons official said. They were recruited with salaries ranging between Rs 10,000 and Rs 30,000 depending on their skills, he said. After the formation of Telangana state in June 2014, the Telangana Prisons department has been implementing innovative schemes and programmes for transforming the lives of inmates such as ‘Mahaparivarthan’, ‘Unnati’, Vidhyadanam, skill development, loans to inmates, employment to inmates and After care services, he said. Though, the department has been initiating various programmes inside the prisons it was necessary to provide them livelihood even after their (ex-prisoners) release, so as to prevent them from falling into a life of crime, the official said. “Since November 2017, ‘Job-melas’ are being conducted and over 650 released prisoners have been provided jobs,” he added. ITBP climbers recover seven bodies near Nanda Devi peak
Pithoragarh: ITBP climbers on Sunday recovered seven bodies believed to be of the mountaineers who had gone missing on way to the Nanda Devi East peak in Uttarakhand nearly a month ago, an officer said. A 10-member team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) dug out the seven bodies, including that of a woman mountaineer, from under the snow, DIG A P D Nimbadia said. A search is on for another body as there were eight members in the team that had gone missing on way to the 17,800-foot-high peak, Nimbadia said. Air Force helicopters also assisted in the operation, named ‘Daredevil’, which had begun a week ago, the officer added. (PTI)
Crocodile enters temple, villagers oppose Forest dept’s rescue efforts
Ahmedabad/Vadodara: A crocodile that strayed into a Khodiyar Mata temple in Gujarat’s Mahisagar district was Sunday rescued even as villagers delayed the forest department operation by claiming the reptile’s presence was an auspicious one, a senior official said. Khodiyar Mata, the family deity of the Patel community in the state, is often depicted in religious literature as riding on a crocodile. A large number of people who had assembled at the Khodiyar Temple in Palla village in Lunwada tehsil offered prayers, conducted aarti and showered vermillion on the 6-foot reptile as it lay near the goddess’ idol, said Lunwada forest department in charge RV Patel. Mahisagar Deputy Conservator of Forests RM Parmar said the people assembled at the temple delayed rescue operations by around two hours. “When our personnel reached there to rescue the crocodile, people opposed it. We waited for two hours as we did not want to hurt religious sentiments. However, later, we managed to get the reptile to a nearby pond,” Parmar said. (PTI)
Former TN DGP who arrested Indira Gandhi dies
Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu DGP V R Lakshminarayanan, who arrested the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a corruption case, died here Sunday following brief illness, family sources said. He was 91 and is survived by a son and two daughters. Lakshminarayanan, fondly known as VRL, was a 1951 batch IPS officer. He began his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Madurai and then rose to become the Joint Director of Central Bureau of Investigation. Lakshminarayanan had worked under various Prime Ministers including late Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Charan Singh, Morarji Desai. He had also arrested the late Indira Gandhi in 1977 in a graft case. Lakshminarayanan retired in 1985 as a Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu. His younger daughter Rama Narayanan said her father passed away around 2 AM Sunday at his residence here. (PTI)
