TURA: Two persons, including an auto rickshaw driver, have been arrested by Tura police in a case of alleged sexual assault by four men near Tura, last week.
The young woman, who hails from South Garo Hills and reportedly has a medical condition, had come to Tura to attend a programme organised by a non-governmental organisation on Wednesday when the incident occurred.
The victim claimed that she was lured to the Riverside in Chibragre area and was made to consume alcohol before the crime was committed by the auto driver and three other persons.
They were returning when the auto broke down at Rongkhon and locals, finding their behaviour strange, accosted them and gave a sound thrashing before calling the police.
Tura police have arrested two of the men, Akash Hajong and Suresh Chetry, while two other suspects, including a local, remain on the run.
However, there are conflicting reports over the actual sequence of events that took place.
One of the arrested men said he had nothing to do with the incident and boarded the vehicle as passenger after failing to get a vehicle from Rongram to return to Tura, while the driver said it was hired by a man who knew the victim and accompanied her to Chibragre.
