GUWAHATI: In a first of its kind, a Nepali language movie, Appa, with English subtitles will be released across multiplexes and cinemas in Assam and Meghalaya on July 5.
The Daya Hang Rai-starrer film is written and directed by Anmol Gurung and produced by Ruden Sada Lepcha, from Kalimpong.
“The film will be released across seven cinemas and multiplexes in Assam and two cinemas (Dreamland in Shillong and Ramona in Byrnihat) in Meghalaya on July 5. Subsequently, it will be released in cities of the Northeast and India,” distribution coordinator (Northeast), Biraj Dhital Sharma told The Shillong Times here on Tuesday.
Born and brought up in Mawprem, Shillong, Sharma said the movie was a maiden attempt to explore the Nepali movie market in Assam and Northeast which has a sizeable Nepali population and give the people big screen experience.
“The movie’s success will encourage us to screen best of the best movies from Darjeeling Sikkim and Nepal here in Northeast. Likewise films from Assam and other parts of the Northeast with subtitles can be screened there, which will pave way for cultural exchange and establish a strong people-to-people connect,” Sharma, 36, who now lives in Kalimpong, said.
“The idea behind the film is to change the way our society looks at a father-son relationship. The movie was shot in the historic Ghoom Railway Station in Darjeeling, while portions of it were shot in places like Sandakphu and Kalimpong,” director, Gurung said while addressing the media here on Tuesday.
