SHILLONG: After Meghalaya and its capital Shillong witnessed soaring temperatures in the last couple of weeks, the state is now likely to receive rainfall in the next three-four days, according to the Indian Metrological Department (IMD).
Director of the Indian Meteorological Department, Shillong, Sanjay Bist, said that the monsoon already made its onset on June 16 and it is expected to rain in the next three-four days in the state.
Even though there could be several reasons why Meghalaya and other neighbouring states have received less rainfall last year and so far this year, the IMD attributed the deficit to seasonal variation.
Stating that weather often changes due to seasonal ) variations, he, however, added that with rainfall finally expected in Shillong the deficit is likely to be covered. It may be mentioned that along with other parts of the region and the country, Shillong too experienced hot weather while rainfall has been niggardly.
According to the Guwahati-based Regional Meteorological Centre, Shillong city recorded the maximum temperature of 29.2 degree Celsius on Monday which was five degrees above normal.
Meghalaya is one of the few places in the world which is well known for the sheer amount of rainfall which it receives throughout the year, but the state has been witnessing less rainfall since last year which is evident from the low water level in Umiam Lake. It may be mentioned that the state received 1888.6 mm of rainfall in 2017 and 1096.2 mm last year registering a drop of 25 per cent. On the other hand, in 2015 rainfall was 1548.3 mm while in 2016 it was 1270.9 mm.
The Director further said that good rains are expected to continue over most parts of Meghalaya in the coming days and the intensity of the rainfall activity will increase.
During that time, very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall activity is expected to lash different parts of the state.
