New Delhi: Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju on Thursday assured the members from the north east that he would personally visit Meghalaya to oversee the preparations for the National Games of 2022.
Mr Rijiju said he is also keen to enlist the support of corporate houses for the National Games to be hosted by the state. Stating this in Lok Sabha during Question Hour, Mr Rijiju informed Shillong MP Vincent Pala of Congress that the Centre is keen to provide all assistance to the state government for the National Games.
He said in fact state Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has met him on the matter recently. “I will be traveling to Shillong as well as Tura – the two venues of the 2022 Games,” Mr Rijiju said. Mr Pala wanted to know the government decision on Rs 200 crore central assistance sought by the state government.
Meghalaya will host the 2022 National Games, which is coinciding with its 50 years of statehood. Meghalaya’s state animal Clouded Leopard will be the mascot for the National Games 2022
Till date, only two states in the North-East have hosted the National Games – Manipur in 1999 and Assam in 2007. (UNI)
