GUWAHATI: The Suren Hanse faction of the Karbi Students Association (KSA) has said that a delegation from the association would soon visit villages along the West Karbi Anglong-West Jaintia Hills border and allay misconception or fear among the residents.
According to a media report, the village headman of Psiar had said that residents of the border village were living in a state of fear after a claim by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council chief executive member, Tuliram Ronghang that the border villages, including Khatkhasla, Moolber and Psiar, fell under Assam.
Ronghang had reportedly made the claim during a visit with a delegation, comprising KAAC and West Karbi Anglong district officials, to the border area on June 29.
While repeated attempts to contact Ronghang went in vain, it is pertinent to mention that the KAAC chief had assured to press for talks between the two states for a permanent resolution.
He had also told the media during his visit that the security of people living in the border hamlets was of prime importance.
Speaking to The Shillong Times from Diphu on Tuesday, KSA central committee president, Suren Hanse said there was no reason for the residents of the border areas to worry.
“We will visit the villages by the second week of this month. We will pacify the residents and urge them to live peacefully,” Hanse said.
The association, it may be noted, had submitted a memorandum recently to the chief minister demanding a survey for proper demarcation of the boundaries and development work in the area.
The move came in the wake of recent attempts by both states to set up border outposts along the constitutional boundary, which apparently has triggered tension among residents of the area.
It may be mentioned that the Jaintia Students Union (JSU) had recently told this correspondent that a delegation from the union would be visiting the area soon to take stock of the situation.
“We are ready open for a joint effort with JSU or any other organisation to restore peace in the area,” Hanse said.
