SHILLONG:Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said the State Animal Welfare would reactivate the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in every district in the state.

Tynsong who is also the Chairman of the Board, said the Board had been constituted according to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960. He added that the district society was to be headed by respective Deputy Commissioners of the eleven districts in the state and the committee had been notified to take care of all welfare of animals.

On the other hand, he informed that the government was planning to create one shelter home in Shillong and Jowai for animals with the Board having discussed about the welfare of animals falling under Act such as dogs, bulls, cattle, pigs etc., while wild animals do not come under the purview of the Act.

He informed that the Supreme Court had also given a directive that the Act – Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960 has to be implemented and adhered to in totality.

Tynsong said the shelter home was for sick animals and would be handed over to the owners after they were treated while stray dogs would be adopted by NGOs.
