Quack lynched in Assam village
Diphu: A quack was allegedly lynched by villagers of Sitoi Adong village in West Karbi Anglong district of Assam on Thursday on charges of sexually exploiting minor girls on the pretext of treatment. The quack, identified as Hussain Ali (45) of neighbouring Hojai district, was residing in the village for sometime and purportedly practising traditional medicine. He allegedly sexually abused two girls over last two days after locking them inside his room on the pretext of giving treatment. When the girls complained to their parents, the villagers gathered at the quack’s house on Thursday morning and assaulted the man. The village headman informed the local Donkamukam police station and police rushed to the spot to rescue the victim. The quack was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have registered a case and started investigation. (UNI)
Tripura gets Rs 358 cr for roads
Agartala: The Centre has sanctioned an additional amount of Rs 358 crore for construction of new roads in rural areas of Tripura, an official said on Friday. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 15 and had demanded an additional fund of Rs 358 crore for speedy completion of the works, a release issued by the CMO said on Thursday. “This amount was demanded for completion of long-term projects which were left unfinished in the state. Even though the previous Left Front government did not have funds to spend, they started the projects. Later on, these projects were left hanging due to lack of funds,” the release said The funds (Rs 358 crore) reached the state treasury on Tuesday, the release said, adding it would help the state government to complete the projects and infrastructure development works. Landslides hit Kohima town
Kohima: Kohima and the state of Manipur have been cut-off by road since Thursday following a massive landslide on National Highway 29, the lifeline of Nagaland and Manipur, with hundreds of vehicles carrying essential commodities stranded on the road. Official sources said that a stretch of road, about 70 meters in length, has sunk about eight to nine feet, affecting vehicular movement since the early hours of Thursday. The district authorities and the police have diverted smaller vehicles via Jotsoma by-pass. But the heavily-loaded trucks and oil tankers are still stranded on the NH-29. The PWD is working to restore normal traffic on the arterial highway. (Agencies)
