SHILLONG: The first meeting of the State Animal Welfare Board, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has decided to set up shelter homes for the animals in the state.
Tynsong said the government is planning to set up a shelter home in Shillong and another in Jowai for animals falling under the Act such as dogs, bulls, cattle and pigs as wild animals do not come under the purview of the Act.
Tynsong said the shelter home will cater to sick animals that will be handed over to the owners after they are treated while stray dogs will be adopted by NGOs.
The State Animal Welfare Board will also reactivate the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the state.
Tynsong, who is also the chairman of the board, said the board has been constituted according to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
He added that the district society is to be headed by the Deputy Commissioners of each of the eleven districts in the state and the committee has been notified to take care of the welfare of the animals.
He informed that the Supreme Court has also given a directive that the Act has to be implemented and adhered to in totality.
