NONGSTOIN: The MLA of Nongstoin, Macmillan Byrsat, has requested Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to intervene in the matter related to the construction of border road which was stopped recently by the Assam Government.
Macmillan Byrsat said that the construction of 6.002 km road under PMGSY from Athiabari to Umshiak started during the month of October, 2018, when some unidentified person from Assam forced and even threatened the Khasi labourers to stop the construction of the road and the work was halted for sometime but resumed after the intervention from the district administration of West khasi Hills.
He also said that numerous meetings were held by the authorities of both Meghalaya and Assam on border issues and one of the resolutions adopted was to maintain status-quo and any developmental work were not to be affected on the interstate border.
But surprisingly, in April, officials including police from Assam came to the construction site and warned the labourers who were engaged in the construction work of the road.
Since then, the construction of the road was stopped without resuming the work till date.
Therefore, Byrsat in his letter to the chief minister requested him to take necessary action with his counterpart in Assam so that the construction of the 6 km road from Anthiabari to Umshiak under the PMGSY scheme is completed at the stipulated time.
