GUWAHATI: Security forces launched a joint operation in the wee hours of Sunday and apprehended a self-styled area commander of NSCN-IM, official sources confirmed on Monday.
“Based on specific information, a joint operation of Indian Army, Assam Rifles and Assam Police resulted in the apprehension of NSCN-IM area commander of Longding-Charaideo-Mon region, Anok Wangsa. The operation involved search of a designated area and laying of ambushes on suspected routes to intercept movement of the cadre,” an official statement said.
“One of the teams intercepted a vehicle moving on the Namtola-Jampan Axis around 3:30 am (July 14), and immediately identified and apprehended the individual. Search of the vehicle yielded concealed weapons and ammunition,” it said.
Wangsa confirmed he had hidden more weapons, ammunition and war like stores in his house located on Assam-Nagaland border.
The teams then carried out a detailed search of his house which resulted in recovery of large cache of arms, ammunition and war-like stores to include one AK-56 rifle, many pistols and more than Rs 5lakh in cash.
“The apprehended individual is the deputy of self-styled major general Absolom Tangkhul of NSCN (IM) who is believed to be involved in the killing of (Arunachal Pradesh) MLA, Tirong Aboh. Apprehension of this individual has been greatly welcomed by the locals of districts of Mon (Nagaland), Longding (Arunachal Pradesh) and Charaideo (Assam),” the statement said.
