101st Anniversary of 69th Garo Labour Corps Day observed in Tura

TURA: Placing of wreaths by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries marked the observation of the 101st Anniversary of the 69th Garo labour Corps Day on Tuesday, at the Cenotaph erected at Lower Babupara in Tura, in memory of the Garo recruits who went to France during the First World War some of whom never returned. The memorial function is being held every year since 1919 and Tuesday’s function as usual was organized by the Tura Municipal Board (TMB).

It may be mentioned that this day is specially remembered to mark the safe arrival of the members of the Corps and in fond memory of those who died and performed noble works as recruits of the 69th Garo Labour Corps in France during the First World War.

As a mark of respect and remembrances of these recruits, the Garo Labour Corps Day was celebrated in a befitting manner with several dignitaries laying floral wreaths at the Cenotaph in Babupara along with Salami and prayers in honour of the departed souls. The salutation was performed by District Police, Tura and 2nd MLP Battalion, Goeragre.

Later, a memorial function was held at District Auditorium, Tura where GHADC CEM, Dipul R Marak participated as the Chief Guest in the presence of GHADC Chairman, Denang T Sangma, Tura Municipal Board Chairman, J D Sangma, Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Mary T Sangma, District Officials, Senior Citizens and students.

Speaking on the occasion, Dipul R Marak expressed his appreciation to the organisers for celebrating the event with great enthusiasm but insisted for more participation from the people since the day is remembered for the selfless sacrifice and spirit of patriotism of our forefathers. Recalling the history of these recruits, he said that they worked with utmost valour which had acclaimed appreciation even from the commanders of allied forces. He urged everyone to respect the brave deeds of our forefathers and follow in their footsteps. He also felt the need for familiarising the youth of today with the heroic deeds of our forefathers.

Retired IGP, F D Sangma while speaking on the occasion, highlighted on the great significance of Garo Labour Corps Day in the history of the Garos and also recalled his association with the celebration by attending the memorial service since his childhood days. He then briefly spoke about the history of these recruits from Tura to Marseilles, France in the year 1916 and their contribution during the World War 1. Lauding their noble works, he urged everyone to take a call if it comes on their way and serve the country diligently in future.Others who spoke on the occasion were Chairman, Tura Municipal Board, J D Sangma, Chief Executive Officer, Tura Municipal Board, Rezia Ch Sangma while Reverend H K Sangma, Pastor, Agilanggre Baptist Church, Tura offered the invocation prayer during the function.
