SHILLONG: Union Minister of state, environment, forest and climate change, Babul Supriyo has assured the Khasi Hills Autonomous District council (KHADC) to lend financial assistance of Rs 77 crore to set up the Research Centre of Forest and Environment in Meghalaya.
This was informed by Deputy CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem when the MDCs comprising of Victor Ranee, Michel Wankhar and Sherborlang Mawlong met the Union Minister.
He said the fund will be sanctioned for 2019-20 and Supriyo has asked them to come back on July 15 before the Council allocates fund for the KHADC.
According to Syiem, having a research centre will allow the Council to have studies conducted on different varieties of trees from Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills to enable the KHADC to plant saplings to be distributed to Hima and the different villages to be planted in Sacred groves and community forests.
