Experts panel to probe HIV discrimination case

SHILLONG: Following the order of the state government to constitute an inquiry committee to probe the allegations of discrimination against HIV patients, the Joint Director, who is in-charge of Shillong Civil Hospital, WW Phira said the committee would constitute experts from the hospital and submit its findings as soon as possible.
He, however, said according to his information, there have been no cases of discrimination.
“We will have experts from the hospital who would conduct a thorough inquiry into the allegations,” informed the Joint Director.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya State Network of Positive People general secretary, Barry Leslie Kharmalki has hailed the decision of the state health department to institute an inquiry into the allegations.
He further said that he is hopeful that the inquiry will reveal the truth and bring to light the sufferings that the people living with HIV had undergone for years due to the discriminatory attitude.
