PSG sign defender Diallo
Paris: Paris Saint-Germain have signed France under-21 international defender Abdou Diallo from Borussia Dortmund on a five-year deal, the French champions announced on Tuesday. German magazine Kicker reported PSG had paid 32 million euros ($35.9 million) plus a further two million euros in bonuses for the 23-year-old centre-back. Diallo, who would have played for France at last month’s under-21 European Championship but for an injury, has spent the last two seasons in Germany, joining Dortmund after a year at Mainz. Prior to that he started his career at Monaco and played five times in the principality club’s run to the Ligue 1 title in 2017. Diallo is PSG’s fifth summer signing, with Spanish duo Pablo Sarabia and Ander Herrera having joined from Sevilla and Manchester United respectively. (AFP)


Vijayveer Sidhu shoots Gold
New Delhi: Vijayveer Sidhu on Tuesday clinched his third gold medal in the ongoing ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. The trio of Rajkanwar Singh Sandhu, Adarsh Singh and Vijayveer Sidhu clinched team gold in pistol event with a total of 1738 and remained ten points ahead of China. For Adarsh, it was his second gold of the competition. The day’s second medal came in the men’s 10m Air Rifle with the trio of Hriday Hazarika, Yash Vardhan and Paarth Makhija winning the team silver with a combined score of 1877.4, which was just 0.4 less than the gold winning Chinese team’s score. China also equalled the junior world record in the process. India continued to top the medals table with seven gold, seven silver and two bronze medals. (UNI)


Commonwealth TT C’ships begins
Cuttack: India may have got the toughest group opponents from among the teams participating in the 21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, beginning at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium here from Wednesday. But team captain and ace paddler A. Sharth Kamal is more than confident that India will retain the Host Association’s Cup on Friday.Sharath was not way off the mark when he talked about the draw as India are clubbed with Singapore and Scotland in group B, while England, the top-ranked team here and placed in group A, have Sri Lanka and Cyprus for company. PCB look for new coach
Karachi: Splitting the captaincy and inviting fresh applications for the national team coach and other support staff will be on the agenda when the PCB’s Cricket Committee meets later this month to review Pakistan’s debacle in the World Cup.Though the Pakistan Cricket Board is tight lipped on the dates for the Cricket Committee meeting, sources said it is expected to be held on July 29.The source told PTI that the meeting was delayed since former captain Misbah-ul-Haq, one of the members of the panel, had plans to travel to the USA on personal work. “If he travels, then he will attend the meeting via video link and if he is in Lahore he will be present in person,” the source said. He said pace-bowling legend Wasim Akram and Urooj Mumtaz, a former captain of the national women’s team, who are the other members of the committee, have already been sounded out for the meeting which will be chaired by PCB MD Wasim Khan. Pakistan finished fifth in the just-concluded World Cup and review of the poor performance of the team will be on the top of agenda of the meeting. (PTI)
