Tree plantation drive held in Nongtrai village
SHILLONG: Lafarge Umiam Mining Private Limited (LUMPL) was awarded the ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ on July 16 during the 10th Mines Environment and Mineral Conservation Week (MEMCW) 2018-19 in recognition of the consistent outstanding achievement of LUMPL in the field of mine environment and mineral conservation.
The event was held under the aegis of the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), Guwahati Region, Government of India.
Speaking during the event, PK Bhattacharya, Regional Controller of Mines, IBM, lauded LUMPL for winning the prestigious award for the third consecutive year and stated that LUMPL is truly “a role model among all mines in the North East region of India”, after which he handed over the award to Nongtrai Limestone Mines of LUMPL.
A total of 14 mines from the north-eastern region participated in the competition namely Star Cement, Dalmia Bharat cement, Topcem Cement, BEST Cement, Green Valley Cement, MCCL, BVCL, AMDC, CCI and Vinay Cement. Meanwhile, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of environment protection and conservation of flora and fauna, LUMPL on Friday organised a tree plantation drive in Nongtrai Village in continuation with the Chief Minister’s ‘One Citizen One Tree’ campaign.
Around 5000 saplings Tree plantation drive held in Nongtrai village were divided among the villagers of Nongtrai and Shella which included 100 coconut trees that will be planted in the hamlet of Pyrkan as a pilot project.
During the event, five orange saplings were distributed to each household in Nongtrai by Operations Director Narayan Sharma in the presence of the Headman and both Executive and Special Committee members of the Nongrai village Durbar.
A programme was also held in the Dorbar hall of Nongtrai which was chaired by the Headman of Nongtrai, P Rapmai.
Speaking during the event, chief guest Sharma, spoke about the importance of trees and the environment.
He also emphasised on reducing the use of plastic. Students of Nongtrai Secondary School also took part in the plantation drive.
