SHILLONG: Veteran politician DD Lapang said NPP is committed to the present MDA coalition.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Lapang said those who wish to join NPP should not be a liability indicating that they should not disturb the coalition.
Though there are media reports regarding the likely exodus of Congress legislators to other parties, Lapang said the present MDA coalition comprising NPP and regional parties is intact and will continue to work in unity.
He said there is already stability and the MDA does not wish to see any more instability which will disturb the overall development of the state.
Recently, the UDP leader Jemino Mawthoh had also asserted that the party will not betray the MDA coalition.
Lapang said as the chief advisor to the MDA government, his duty is to ensure stability of the government.
“I am meeting the members of the MDA coalition every now and then for the smooth functioning of the government”, he said.
Lapang, who is also the chairman of North East Coordination Committee of NCP, said he will try to strengthen the party in the region.
Harijan Colony issue
Lapang said the High Level Committee should be given a free hand to take a decision on the issues related to Harijan Colony.
According to Lapang, the committee is asking for land documents from the residents so that an appropriate decision can be taken regarding the matter.
If there are illegal settlers, this has to be examined by the committee, he said.
Mechanism to check influx
As the state government is planning to amend the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, the former chief minister said the government is committed to adopt a proper mechanism to address the issue.
“May be the state government can even come up with an ordinance related to ways and means to check influx”, he said.
While some pressure groups are demanding entry-exit points and the amendment to Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, the HYC is in favour of introduction of ILP in the state.
