SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has sought the intervention of the state health minister in regard to raising the number of posts reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates in NEIGRIHMS.
NEIGRIHMS had recently notified direct recruitment for 264 Group B and C posts which includes nursing officers, technical assistants, pharmacists and health educators.
According to the notification, the reservation was made for just 17 Scheduled Tribe candidates as against 34 Scheduled Caste, 62 for Other Backward Classes, 23 EWS (economically weaker section) and 95 unreserved posts.
In a memorandum to state health minister A.L Hek on Friday, the youth wing of KHNAM placed a strong protest against what it termed was a “biased approach” of the NEIGRIHMS while making reservation for the posts.
“It is to be noted that Meghalaya is a tribal state, with most of the youth belonging to ST category. However, the least number of seats is allotted to ST, whereas, SC and OBC were allotted 34 and 62 number of reserved seats respectively,” KHNAM youth wing president, Thomas Passah, stated in the memorandum.
“Since the state of Meghalaya is largely a tribal dominant state and for the welfare of the unemployed youths of the state, we suggest that the number of reserved posts for ST be increased to 70 at the least. This may be done by reducing the number of posts reserved for SC and OBC,” Passah said.
