SHILLONG: The NEHU has come in for flak for allegedly taking a whimsical step in PhD admission, especially in its Biomedical engineering department.
Sources said that there are only three seats available for PhD (BME) in NEHU but the university did not take any step as far as the candidature of one Ankita Tiwari is concerned who took admission for PhD (BME) in IIT Guwahati.
Source said that the NEHU authorities neither asked her to vacate the seat nor issued any notice to her even as sources added that the same vacancy could have been utilised by other students.
When contacted, her instructor, Manashjit Gogoi, from the Department of Biomechanical Engineering, NEHU said that Tiwari had joined the university last year along with two other students. However she joined IIT Guwahati without resigning from NEHU.
It was informed that students can take admission anywhere and it depends on them whether they resign from there or not.
The sources said that Tiwari was in NEHU for two-three months and she did not even submit her migration certificate, adding in NEHU there is a rule that within 18 months from the date of joining, the students have to register otherwise, the candidature will be terminated.
It was also informed that Dinesh Bhatia was her guide and since he is under suspension, they cannot do anything and it is he only who will have to take a decision in this regard.
