Prohibitory orders imposed in Assam’s Hailakandi district
Hailakandi: The Hailakandi district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC in the entire district, Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli said on Tuesday. The decision was made following reports that some elements and groups are trying to disturb the peace in the district, Jalli said. This move seems to be a preventive measure ahead of the Eid festival on August 12 and the Independence Day, as Hailakandi had been under curfew between May 10 and 25 following a communal clash which left 1 person dead and 14 others injured. The deputy commissioner’s order banned assembly of five or more persons in public places, carrying of weapons or fire arms, holding public meetings or rally until the order is withdrawn. (PTI)


First-time MLA becomes deputy speaker in Nagaland Assembly
Kohima: Sharingain Longkumer, a first-time MLA, was elected unopposed as the deputy speaker of the Nagaland Assembly on Tuesday. Speaker Vikho-o Yhoshu said only Longkumer has filed nomination for the post and declared him elected. The post fell vacant following a reshuffle in the ministry on July 23, in which the then Deputy Speaker Zhaleo Rio was made a minister. Longkumer, 37, was elected as the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) nominee in a by-election on April 11 from Aonglenden seat. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Leader of Opposition T R Zeliang congratulated the newly-elected deputy speaker who sought the cooperation and support of the all the members of the House. (PTI)


1,818 persons penalised for littering railway premises
Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway has penalised 1,818 persons and collected Rs 3,65,895 as penalty from them for littering railway premises since October 2018, an official said on Tuesday. Railways Act, 1989, prohibits littering in any occupied or unoccupied railway premises or coaches, chief public relations officer of NFR, P J Sharma said. A fine of Rs 500 can be imposed on the offenders who are found littering the railway premises both inside coaches and in stations, he said, adding RPF personnel have been authorised to detain offenders and levy penalty. NFR has installed CCTVs for monitoring of cleanliness in as many as 13 stations throughout the zone and these are monitored by the station master, commercial and RPF Officers and the Divisional Railway Manager. There has been 60 per cent increase in dustbins that are provided in station premises all over the zone, he said, adding, colour segregation of dustbins has also been done so as to enable separation of dry and wet waste to facilitate better waste disposal. Frequent announcements are made in station premises requesting the passengers to maintain cleanliness within stations and informing them about the penalty provisions of the Railway Act, the CPRO said. Assam guv reviews upkeep of 17th century temple
Guwahati: Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi paid a visit to the Umananda Temple, a 17th century Shiva temple, on the Peacock island in the river Brahmaputra after it reopened on Tuesday. The temple remained closed for the past several days in view of the flood in the state. The visit was undertaken to ascertain the upkeep of the temple and its vicinity especially in the aftermath of the floods, a Raj Bhaban statement said here. Mukhi also talked to the temple priests and others to find out whether the floods have caused any damage to the island or the structures leading to the temple. Accompanied by his wife Prem Mukhi, the governor offered puja at the temple and prayed for the well-being of the people of the state, the statement said. He directed district Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu to ensure cleanliness in and around the temple and put in place the best possible amenities for the devotees, keeping in mind its tourism potential. Arunachal’s Pasighat becomes second ODF town in state
Itanagar: Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district has become the second town in the state to be declared as Open Defecation Free (ODF), officials said on Tuesday. Deputy Commissioner Dr Kinny Singh, also the administrator of the Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC), made the declaration recently, they said. Singh had said that it was a herculean task to achieve the ODF tag under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) and credited the success to the town residents. She had said hygiene of the town will be maintained. Pasighat has been chosen for the Smart City project along with Itanagar. Tawang near the India-China border was the first town in the state to be declared ODF in 2017. The same year, Arunachal Pradesh was declared ODF under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural). (PTI)

Cash, drugs seized in Tripura
Sonamura: The jawans of BSF 145 Bn recovered cash worth 4 lakh Bangladeshi currency on Monday night during a operation at Sonapur village under Sepahijala district. According to report, the currencies were hidden in a helmet and the accused fled leaving his motorcycle and helmet behind. During search, BSF jawans found the currency stashed inside the helmet. The jawans also recovered 100 Yaba tablets hidden inside the helmet during the search. (UNI)
