One held for trying to pass off Rasna powder as heroin
SHILLONG: Police on Wednesday arrested a resident from Jhalupara while he was trying to sell Rasna powder as heroin. The patrolling party of the police caught the person who has been identified as Manjit Singh (27)—a resident of Goralane, Health Complex—from Ghat Bulding, Jhalupara. After conducting the tests by the police on the powder, it was found out that it was no heroin and Singh was trying to deceive the addicts since the supply of heroin has dried up in Shillong. The police knew that such instances are taking place in the city where addicts are being conned who end up buying Rasna instead of heroin. The police informed that the supply of drugs has dried up in the city because of the intensified vigil at police checkpoints for the Independence Day celebrations.
Union against Centre’s move
Shillong: Centre of Medical and Sales Representatives’ Union (North East Region), affiliated to FMRAI & CITU, will submit a memorandum on Saturday to the Centre against the ill move of it to Repeal the Sales Promotion Employees (Condition of Service) Act, 1976. A press statement informed that the government is repealing the Act in the name of “ease of business” thus taking away whatever protection on Service Condition was available under provision and Rules of SPE Act. It also added that the union will protest against the Labour Law Reforms that is being brought under the Labour Codes Bills that are presently under process. The Central Govt Labour Policies are in favour of corporates and will enable them to hire and fire workers at their will, it stated. The union has called upon all sales promotion employees in the entire North East region to rise to the ocassion and cease all work for half day and participate in a peaceful movement against the anti-worker policy of the Centre
Civic action programme
Shillong: To commemorate India’s 73rd years of Independence, a civic action programme was organised by the Border Security Force (BSF) at BOP Bholaganj of East Khasi Hills on Tuesday. Various community-usage items including LED TVs along with DTH sets, chairs, sport items and stationery items were distributed to needy schools in the bordering area. Approximately 150 villagers, teachers and students from Nongjuri, Bholaganj, Beltoli, Shella, Patharghat, Kasinda and Ryngkua villages attended the programme.
CRPF conducts cleaning drive
Shillong: A cleaning drive was conducted by the officers and jawans of the Northeastern Sector of CRPF in the city on Wednesday. With the main purpose to awaken the feeling of cleanliness among the general public, the officers and jawans picked up brooms and cleaned Pynthorumkhrah area. Around 200 men participated in the cleaning exercise. Half of a truck was loaded with plastic, paper, empty bottles, etc which were collected, and later disposed off in the municipal dumping ground.
Vet dispensary inaugurated
TURA: The newly constructed Veterinary Dispensary at Makalgonchu in West Garo Hills was inaugurated on Tuesday by Gambegre MLA and Chairman of the State Government Programme Implementation and Monitoring Committee (SGPIMC) Saleng A Sangma. Speaking on the occasion, Sangma congratulated the department for their hard work and dedication in making the dispensary functional and hoped that it would cater to the animal-care needs of the people of the area. In his keynote address, District Veterinary Officer HK Marak informed that pig insurance is available at the department to help the farmers to insure their pigs at the dispensary by paying Rs 46 per year, adding that the pig should be within 6 months to 3 years old during the time of insurance.
