Deficit teachers’ body meets CM for regular pay

SHILLONG: The Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers Association (KJDSTA) and Garo Hills Deficit School Teachers and Employees Association (GHDSTEA) met the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday and aired their varied pending demands.
The teachers’ associations have also submitted a memorandum.
The deficit teachers demanded the extension of retirement benefit scheme to deficit school teachers as recommended by the Meghalaya Fifth Pay Commission.
The associations also demanded for regular and monthly salary of the deficit school teachers.
The teachers are paid quarterly and hence the associations sought CM’s intervention.
The teachers highlighted the implementation of recommendation of Meghalaya Fifth Pay Commission and said that the state government has not implemented the recommendation of the Fifth Pay Commission even though it hiked the salary of teachers since last year which include pension benefits, medical reimbursement, uniform leaves especially maternity leave.
The association also spoke about raising of death cum retirement gratuity amount to Rs 10 lakh on a par with government employees as recommended by the Fifth Pay Commission.
The demand to release the 2nd installment of pending arrear of revised pay before Teacher’s Day was made by the association.
They also pointed out that any senior most graduate teacher with B.Ed has the right to take over as principal and vice principal based on seniority, capability, efficiency, experience and confidential report and post graduate degree holders in institutions run by minority groups.
Later, in a statement issued here, the president of KJDSTA, Babu Kular Khonjirem, said the meeting between the chief minister and both deficit school teachers’ associations of the state, the KJDSTA and GHDSTEA was very cordial and positive.
The chief minister told the delegation of both the associations that he cannot by-pass the education department before taking a decision on various issues of deficit teachers in the state.
He will discuss with the Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and the officials of the department before fulfilling the demands of the deficit school teachers.
The KJDSTA will hold a felicitation cum general meeting on August 22, at U Soso Tham Auditorium.
The first part of the programe is the felicitation to E D Nongsiang and RS Marbaniang the former president and former vice president of the KJDSTA respectively.
The former education minister R G Lyngdoh will be the special guest.
