SHILLONG: Chairman of the State Planning Board, Lambor Malngiang, has proposed that more rehabilitation centres must be established in the state.
Addressing the press after chairing a meeting on drugs which was attended by NGOs, traditional heads and Church leaders, he said, “There are no proper rehabilitation centres in the state. We have seen that drug addiction has affected the livelihood of families as well.”
There are no state-run rehabilitation centres. The ones operational are run by individuals, organisations and the Church.
Malngiang said house owners should be cautious while taking in tenants and check their antecedents.
On the other hand, he also said that a policy on drugs is needed as the police department is finding it tough to take action in the absence of one.
He added that the policy is under preparation and he will have a meeting with the Social Welfare Department in this connection.
Malngiang lauded the police for the crackdown on drugs which has led to seizures worth Rs 5-6 crore.
He informed that 31 cases have been registered till date in 2019 and the arrested persons have been booked under Section 25 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
