Gorkha Parisangha moves MHA on D-voter issue

GUWAHATI: A delegation from the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha recently met joint secretary (Northeast), Union ministry of home affairs, Satyendra Garg and sought implementation of the home ministry’s notification on Gorkha D-voters with necessary corrections for an early resolution of the issue.

The home ministry had issued a notification on October 10, 2018, stating that Gorkhas and people of Nepali origin cannot be tried in Foreigner Tribunals.

“But the government of Assam did not file writ petition before the proper Division Bench of the High Court seeking withdrawal of Gorkha cases from FTs across Assam,” a statement issued by the Parisangha on Monday, said.

The delegation led by national working president of the Parisangha, Munish Tamang, discussed issues concerning rejection from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) of the Gorkhas arbitrarily marked “D” (doubtful) in the electoral rolls and about implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

The Parisangha further sought constitutional safeguards for Gorkhas under Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
