Swachh Survekshan Grameen launched in Resubelpara
TURA: North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), S C Sadhu launched the District Swachh Survekshan at Multi Facility Hall, Bakrapara, in Resubelpara on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Sadhu stressed on the need for a clean surrounding which is a prerequisite for overall development which requires behavioural change on the part of all stakeholders towards proper waste disposal, reduced dependency on plastics, restoration and minimal damage to environment. A D Sangma, E.E (PHE) & Member Secretary of SBM (G) informed that Swachh Survekshan aims to rank districts across India on sanitation. As many as 25 villages from each district will be surveyed on sanitation by IPOS, Research Private Limited Delhi commencing from August 17 to September 17 and it will be a digital and paperless survey, he added.

NEIGRIHMS faculty condemns murder of tea garden doctor
SHILLONG: The NEIGRIHMS Faculty Association (NFA) condemns the gruesome murder of Dr Deben Dutta at the Teok Tea estate, the association informed in a statement issued here. The association has urged the authorities to take note of repeated occurrence of such heinous incidents and decree solid provisions to ensure the safety and security of healthcare providers. “This barbaric incident has shocked us all. We denounce such acts of barbarism against any individual and strongly condemn it. We stand in solidarity with IMA, Assam and AMSA during this time of sorrow,” it said.

GSU alleges inefficiency in SBI
TURA: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), East Zone Williamnagar has alleged ‘lack of services’ at the SBI Williamnagar branch and the practice of ‘unprofessionalism’ by its staff towards its customers. In its complaint to the Regional Manager, SBI in Guwahati, the union said that there have been many cases when the staff is seen busy in some other priorities instead of attending to the customers at peak hours. “There are also instances when the staff is found to be extremely lethargic, rude and showing callous attitude towards the customers further delaying the day-to-day functioning of the bank,” the union alleged.

ISKON celebrates Janmashtami
SHILLONG: Devotees of ISKCON along with the public in general organised a two-day Janmashtami programme on August 24 followed by Nandotsav on the August 25. The programme was attended by devotees from all corners of the city. The inaugural function was attended by Chief Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal of the Meghalaya High Court which was followed by various cultural programme conducted by children from R&R Colony besides professionals. Spiritual discourses and kirtans were sung by Bhakti Advaita Nandatir Maharaj along with his team who visited Shillong temple all the way from Bangladesh. The prize distribution will be held on September 6 on the occassion of Radhashtami the birthday of Srimati Radharani.

Singh assumes charge at NEEPCO
SHILLONG: V.K. Singh has assumed charge of CMD, NEEPCO on Sunday, a release issued here informed. Singh has more than 34 years of experience in all the facets of Hydro & Gas based power generation spanning design, planning, execution, operation & maintenance with involvement in two dozen Hydro and Gas Based Power Projects of India. NEEPCO has commissioned two Hydro Power Projects under his leadership. Prior to this he was a Director (Technical) in NEEPCO. With masters in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, he joined NHPC in December, 1984. Under his leadership, the 280 MW Dhauliganga Hydro Power Plant of NHPC, which was completely devastated by the Uttarakhand floods of June 2013, was restored to full operational levels in a record time of 10 months.

College to celebrate 35th anniv
NONGPOH: Ri Bhoi College, Mawdiangum Nongpoh, will complete 35 years of its existence in the field contributing education to the people of Ri Bhoi on the September 9. To commemorate the day, the alumni association of the college, Ri Bhoi College Alumni Association, will organise a small function. According to the alumni association president Kyrmenlang Uriah, the 35th foundation day of the college will begin from 9 am where association members will pay tributes to the founding member and donor. He also informed that the celebration will be followed by an interaction session with parents and teachers of the college besides a local cuisine food festival. The alumni president also invited students, past pupil, parents, residents and public for the food festival.

Ex-paramilitary discusses demands
SHILLONG: The ex-paramilitary force of Meghalaya held a meeting on Saturday to discuss the demands raised by the paramilitary personnel and their families. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Shankar Lal, State General Secretary of Ex-Paramilitary force at Bhanbukta School Nongmynsong. The force discussed about the implementation of the old pension scheme that has been discontinued since 2004, implementation of One Rank One Pension (OROP), Martyr Status, the Ex-servicemen status and waiver of 50 per cent GST at CPC Canteen. It further discussed on setting up of paramilitary welfare board in every district of the state and inclusion of ECHS facility. The ex-paramilitary mahapanchayat in Meghalaya has appealed to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to constitute the paramilitary force welfare board.

Club observes Tagore’s birth anniv
SHILLONG: The Rabindranath Tagore Club (R.T.C.), Laban celebrated the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore at U Soso Tham Auditorium on Sunday from 4 pm onwards. The programme also held the prize distribution ceremony of 12th Inter Shillong Cultural Event, 2019. The chief guest of the programme was South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai besides guest of honour Naba Bhattacharjee, President CPC Meghalaya & Member of BCCI. Others who were present included J. L. Das, General Secretary CPC P. B. Chowkhani, Santosh Kr. Das, Rana Das, Ganapada Ghosh, Sudip Purkayastha, Edward Kharwanlang, Devi Dhar, Sukla Dam, Sushmita Das and others. The Overall Champion of the 12th Inter Shillong Cultural Event, 2019 was Shreyoshi Das, who was awarded the trophy by chief guest Sanbor Shullai. A memento, certificate and special trophy for the best performance in Rabindra Sangeet was awarded to Debadrita Roy, Dipa Barman received the best performance for Folk Song award and the best performance in recitation was awarded to Shreyoshi Das.
