SHILLONG: The steering committee of the Dorbar Kur has come up with suggestions for the draft of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Clan Administration), Bill, 2018.
The committee felt that it has become necessary to codify and regulate the system of Kur of the Khasi-Pnar tribe being a matrilineal system dependent on a strong clan or Kur system.
Addressing a press conference here, chairman of the steering committee, Khrawbuit Ryntathiang said, “There is a need to understand the love for the Khasi and Jaintia community…… to love one’s community.” Ryntathiang informed that in July, the committee submitted suggestions to the Khasi Social Custom of Lineage Act.
He said, “The Khasi Social Custom of Lineage should be based on Clan Bill. The Clan Bill should have been tabled before the Khasi Social Custom of Lineage.”
The committee has suggestions on mixed marriages, personal law, rangbah kur, personal law, removal and suspension of rangbah kur and other functionaries, prohibition to acquire a clan name through affidavits and others.
