Loss of land at Balat due to erosion

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed that in Balat, there is loss of land along the left bank due to erosion caused by Umngi river from Puja committee land upto confluence with Dakini river. Total length affected is 500 m approximately and width of bank loss is about 5 to 10 metres.
He was replying to queries posed by Congress MLA HM Shangpliang on damages caused by the River Umngi during the question hour on Friday.
There has been no damage to Dangar village from the flood of Umngi river. However, there is land loss at Dangar Dop area due to erosion caused by Umngi river.
In Lalpani, there is some river bank erosion due to flood of Umngi river. There was no report on the loss of life and livestock.
As for the steps taken by the department to protect the life and property in these areas from the damages caused by the river, Sangma said the estimate for emergency bank protection work for Rs 1.75 crore was submitted to the government. Apart from this, a DPR for Flood Protection works from Balat to Lalpani for Rs 111.85 crore has been submitted to CWC.
Sangma said no compensation has been paid for the damages to the property and cultivation in these areas.
