The Shillong Times in collaboration with the different departments of the government, schools, colleges, universities, environmental NGOs and concerned citizens have begun cleaning up the upper reaches of the Umkhrah River starting from Umkaliar river.

Accordingly on September 9 a meeting was convened by SK Lato, a senior resident of Jowai, where several concerned citizens and leaders of different organisations were present.
The meeting decided to form a committee to launch the Clean, Green Jowai Campaign.
SK Lato was unanimously elected the president of the committee with Arwotki Sumer as vice president, HH Mohrmen as secretary and Rudolph A Laloo as assistant secretary.

The committee has inducted 24 members from different walks of life and different areas of Jowai.

The committee also felt that it is important to clean up the Myntdu River which surrounds Jowai town and called on every resident to lend their support to this campaign and work unitedly in order to restore the clean image of Jowai and its surroundings and to create a more healthy environment.
The committee also stated that the collaboration of the Deputy Commissioner of Jowai, the JHADC, Jowai Municipal Board, the Dorbar Chnong Tympang Club, Iawmusiang, and all those responsible for running the three markets, namely ka Ïaw Seiñ Raid Jowai, ka Ïaw chor CNI and Iaw Chyiap Presbyterian Church, Jowai are necessary to make this campaign a success
