Student leader held on rape charge
TURA: East Garo Hills police on Tuesday arrested a student leader from Songsak for allegedly raping and impregnating a minor girl. According to police, Riprap T Sangma hailing from Chidimit Nengsat area of Songsak had been allegedly using threats and intimidation for the past few years to commit rape on the minor girl. He is the regional secretary of the GSU Songsak unit. The family of the 17-year-old girl filed a police complaint last week after the girl, who was found to be pregnant, told them about the threats used by the accused to commit the crime. “He has been arrested and forwarded to court and a case has been registered under relevant sections of IPC and POCSO Act,” informed district police chief RTG Momin.
Unclaimed bodies
SHILLONG/JOWAI: The Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills has informed that one Gongme Marak (56), who was brought from Tura in 2011 and admitted to MIMHANS Hospital for treatment, has expired on September 10 at 6.30 am. After observing all legal formalities the body was sent to SDM&HO Civil Hospital, Shillong for holding post mortem examination. The body is kept at the Civil Hospital morgue room for claiming. Meanwhile, one unidentified body of a non-tribal was found on the roadside along the National Highway NH – 6 near a carwash centre at Ialong village in West Jaintia Hills on Monday around 10:40 am. The police have raised suspicion of murder. All formalities have been done and the body of the deceased has been kept at the morgue, Ialong Civil Hospital for claiming.

Kishan Man-Dhan Yojna launched
TURA/WILLIAMNAGAR: A pension scheme of the central government for farmers titled the ‘Pradhan Mantri Kishan Man-Dhan Yojna’ was launched in East Garo Hills at a function in Williamnagar by Swapnil Tembe, Deputy Commissioner OF East Garo Hills, in the presence of the district agriculture officer, district horticulture officer, officials from Krishi Vigiyan Kendra, Agriculture Technology Management Agency, District Manager of Common Services centre, on September 13. The DC informed that under this scheme, the small and marginal farmers will receive a pension of Rs 3,000 per head on attaining the age of 60 years. He also urged the officials of agriculture and other line departments to encourage the farmers to grab the opportunities being offered to them. The District Agriculture Officer, Sosten N Marak highlighted the objectives of the scheme and informed that awareness campaigns will be organised in all the C&RD blocks of the district in due course of time. The District Manager, Common Services Centre, Michael Jose D Sangma, highlighted the enrolment process and informed that the centres have started enrolment from September 12 onwards.
SHCDM Placement Drive expands
SHILLONG: After the overwhelming response to the Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya (SHCDM) Placement Drive held earlier this month, the project mobilisers are taking the drive statewide thereby providing opportunity for on-the-spot registration and counseling for the youth of the rest of the parts of Meghalaya. As part of the Asian Development Bank assisted SHCDM programme, the mobilising team of Aide-Et-Action, Meghalaya are taking the pre-placement drive to Nongstoin (September 18), Khliehriat (September 19), William Nagar (September 21), Byrnihat (September 23), Mawkyrwat and Resubelpara (September 24), Ampati & Jowai (September 25) and a two-day drive in Tura (September 27 and 28). Candidates can follow up on the programme by downloading and signing in to the Meghlaya Youth Network or MYN app available on the Google Playstore.

SHILLONG: The Advanced Level Biotech Hub organised a three-day programme on skill development in Biotechnology in North East India on ‘Value Additions to Bio resource & Entrepreneurship Development’ which concluded on Monday. The workshop was sponsored by the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development, Imphal through Department of Biotechnology, Government of India (DBT-GoI), New Delhi and jointly organised by the Biotech Park, Lucknow and Advanced Level Biotech Hub, St. Edmund’s College, Shillong. The workshop was designedfor the UG students, desiring to pursue careers as entrepreneurs. A total of 21 students from different backgrounds in life sciences participated in the programme. The objective of the workshop was to impart introductory knowledge in Entrepreneurship as well as to motivate youngsters to undertake the same as a career option. Padma Shree Awardee Pramod Tandon, former Vice Chancellor and Current CEO of the Biotech Park, Lucknow delivered lecture on ‘Bioeconomic and Sustainable Development in Northeast India’.
