TURA: As part of the celebration of POSHAN Maah in South West Garo Hills district, POSHAN Mela-cum-Workshop was organised at Gonglanggre MFC at Garobadha on Tuesday while street plays were performed by Betasing and Zikzak ICDS Projects at Ampati weekly market on the next day.
At Gonglanggre, 700 people including medical officials and health workers, SHGs, and the local villagers participated in the POSHAN Mela.
A recipe competition in two categories: for complementary feeding for infants and for pregnant mothers, was held during the Mela and prizes were given to the winners. The Mela also included a display of locally available nutritious vegetables and fruits, while the workshop was conducted by Medical & Health Officer of Garobadha PHC Timchida Marak.
A street play performed by Betasing ICDS Project at Ampati Bazar depicted the importance of complementary feeding since breast milk is insufficient for a growing child. The need for multi-nutritious food to be included in complementary feeding and the importance of immunisation of children to fight off diseases was presented in the play.
On the other hand, Zikzak ICDS Project presented a play to spread awareness on hygiene and sanitation and the need for villagers to cooperate with concerned government departments in the construction of toilets to protect themselves from diseases.
Meanwhile, the department of Social Welfare in East Garo Hills in collaboration with the district administration organised a rally as part of Rashtriya POSHAN Maah in Williamnagar on Wednesday where large number of people including school children, parents, government officials, SHGs, etc. participated.
East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Tembe, while flagging off the rally, highlighted the importance of POSHAN Abhiyan and Rashtriya POSHAN Maah.
