SHILLONG: The United Hynniewtrep Movement, East Jaintia Hills has objected to the public hearing at Brichyrnot village regarding expansion of mine by Star Cements Ltd as the 42.051 hectar area which has been proposed is forest land near Narpuh wild life sanctuary and Lukha river.
In a statement issued to the press on Saturday, the organisation said the public hearing scheduled on October 19 to allow the expansion will only cause more destruction to the environment and it will have serious impact on farmlands and crops.
“Since the cement factory started in East Jaintia Hills, the environment has been changing due to the mining of limestone and it has also affected many caves”, he said.
The setting up of the cement factory at Narpuh Elaka has done more damage affecting the environment, the NGO said.
The pressure group also asked the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board not to conduct any public hearing regarding the matter.
