Garo Hills comes together to protect environment

TURA: Garo Hills commemorated the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi by organising various programmes in different districts on Wednesday.
Different programmes were held in Tura beginning with a Walkathon from Chandmary Playground to DC’s Park, a cycling event to the Pelga Dare waterfalls including mass cleaning drives and an official function along with a cultural programme at the district auditorium.
The walkathon and cycling events were flagged off by Tura Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh who also took part in the cycling event along with his wife.
Superintendent of Police, MGR Kumar who was also present urged the people to use cloth bags for shopping and to take care of the environment.
Dozens of students from Don Bosco College under the NSS unit joined the ‘Fit India 2 Km Plogging’.
Fit India plogging events were also organised in Baghmara, South Garo Hills and Resubelpara in North Garo Hills by the district administrations.
Reusable bags launched
In South West Garo Hills, a cycle rally, mass cleaning drive and street plays on cleanliness and sanitation were organized in Ampati on Wednesday including the launch of reusable carry bags as a replacement to plastic bags.
The rally was flagged off by ADC & Project Director, DRDA, Ampati SC Laloo.
Local MLA Miani D Shira and others also took part in the rally at Ampati.
The project director DRDA fficially launched and distributed reusable handmade carry bags manufactured by the School of Livelihood & Rural Development (SLRD).
A’chik Matgrik Kotok
Earlier, the A’chik Matgrik Kotok (AMK) also requested all shops and whole sellers to refrain from using plastic products.
The AMK also informed that it will file FIRs against those who are found violating the order and encouraged the public to use the cloth bags instead.
Swachhta award
Swachh Bharat Diwas was observed in North Garo Hills at the Multipurpose Cooperative Hall in Mendipathar in which Kharkutta MLA and chairman of MNREDA Rupert momin was present as the chief guest.
The Swachhta Award was felicitated to village leaders and Swachh Bharat facilitators namely Gretington Marak, Poleng Marak, Frence Marak, Largie Sangma and Exbirth Momin.
Cleanliness drives
As part of the ‘Swachhta hi Seva’ campaign, a cleanliness and plastic free drive was conducted by the 120 Bn CRPF in collaboration with the Tura Civil Hospital. A cleaning drive inside the Tura Civil Hospital premises was also conducted.
Earlier, the CRPF also organised a similar programme at the Matchakolgre Industrial premises.
A tree plantation drive was also conducted inside the 120 Bn CRPF premises.
Meanwhile, the A’chik Mahindra Pik-up Union (AMPU) Dakkopgre, Tura conducted a cleaning drive in and around PA Sangma areas and segregated waste plastic materials to the Tura Municipal Board.
