SHILLONG: All the four trade unions of North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd have expressed their resentment over the recent development of merger and acquisition of NEEPCO along with other PSUs.
The merger and acquisition of NEEPCO was reported in the media recently.
The Trade Unions of NEEPCO have opposed such merger/disinvestment/privatization by the Ministry of Power since NEEPCO was established in 1976 under North Eastern Council not only to tap vast hydro power potential in the region but also for socio economic development of the citizens of the Northeastern region.
“The merger of NEEPCO with other entity will not be in the best interest of the employees and the region. At present 95% employees of the Corporation are from the region and merger of Corporation will have long term effect in terms of employment and other benefits of the region”, the trade unions said.
The Corporation has its installed capacity of 1457 MW and soon it will commission another 600 MW in Kameng Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh.
“The trade unions of NEEPCO are fully cooperating with the management and there is no industrial disharmony in the Corporation”, they said.
The unions of NEEPCO said they believe in constructive activities and are committed for the growth of the Corporation.
A sense of fear has already gripped in the minds of the employees ever since the news of merger, disinvestment and acquisition of NEEPCO appeared in media.
“The Ministry of Power must take all the stake holders on board before taking such decision since the scope of employment in North Eastern region is limited and the present trend of disinvestment of PSUs and merger of banks by the Government of India will contribute to more unemployment in the region”, the unions said.
The unions also appealed to the union ministry of power that the merger of NEEPCO will not be in the interest of the region rather more projects should be handed over to NEEPCO in the region.
