2 trainee pilots killed in crash
Hyderabad: Two trainee pilots including a woman were killed after their aircraft crashed in a field in Vikarabad district on Sunday, police said. The incident occurred in Bantwaram mandal of the district resulting in the death of the two pilots, they said. A resident of the village said it was raining heavily when the trainer aircraft crashed. The aircraft belongs to a private aviation training institute in the city, they added. (PTI)
Dawood aide held for extortion
Mumbai: An alleged aide of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim was arrested for trying to extort Rs 5 lakh from a businessman in Mumbai, police said on Sunday. Riyaz Bhati (50) was picked up by Crime Branch’s Unit I on Friday from Crawford Market area in south Mumbai on the basis of an FIR registered at Juhu police station in June this year, an official said. The Goregaon-based complainant had alleged that Bhati was his business partner who started demanding money by dropping names of underworld operatives after he called off the partnership, the official said. Unit I senior inspector Vinayak Mer said Bhati was arrested under section 384 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code and had been remanded in police custody till October 9. Bhati was held by the police’s Anti-Extortion Cell in July this year for allegedly forging a signature to get membership of the Mumbai Cricket Association, an official said. In August, Bhati and his brother were booked by Amboli police station in an extortion case. Officials said he is also an accused in two firing cases in Khandala and a land grab case in Malad. (PTI)
Man kills self after losing Rs 78L
Rajkot: A man allegedly committed suicide after losing Rs 78 lakh while playing an online poker game in Gujarat’s Rajkot district, police said on Sunday. Krunal Mehta (39) ended his life by jumping into a well in the district’s Mota Mava area late Wednesday night. The body was found floating in the well the next morning, an official at Rajkot taluka police station said. “Our probe has revealed that he took the extreme step as he lost Rs 78 lakh while playing a poker game on his mobile phone,” police inspector Vikram Vanzara said. “We have recovered a suicide note from his home in which he purportedly stated that he borrowed Rs 78 lakh from his friends and relatives to play ‘PokerBaazi’,” he said. Mehta worked in an IT company and would often borrow money to play poker in which he lost vast sums regularly, he said. “He had shared his bank account details on the mobile gaming app. After Mehta’s death, his brother received an e- mail with bank transaction details. This gave a break-up of the money that was deducted as he went about losing several games in succession,” Vanzara said. The police’s cyber cell is also investigating the case, he added. (PTI)
Man arrested for killing monkey
Muzaffarnagar: A man has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district for allegedly killing a monkey with his licensed gun, police said on Sunday. They said Hafeez Ahmad allegedly shot dead the monkey in Abdan village under Jhinjhana police station limits on Saturday, following which local Bajrang Dal activists staged a protest. Later, Ahmad was arrested, the police said. A case has been registered against Ahmad and his licensed gun seized, they said. (PTI)
