SHILLONG/ TURA: Two persons died in separate incidents in Shillong and Tura on Tuesday.
One person died on the spot after he was run over by a truck in Polo on Tuesday.
SP (Traffic) Bikram D Marak informed that the accident took place at 2.10 pm near Matri Mandir, Polo.
According to the police, the pedestrian identified as Atul Arora (46), a resident of Nongmynsong, Dongkadiang, got slipped while he was passing through a footpath and fell down on the road side and was run over by a truck (ML05 C 3959).
The truck was kept at the police station for MVI examination.
The body was shifted to Civil Hospital and the postmortem was conducted on Wednesday after which the body was handed over to the family. The last rites of the deceased were performed on Wednesday.
In Tura, while the immersion procession on Dashami was taking place simultaneously in different parts of Garo Hills, tragedy struck in the border village of Purakhasia when a 10 year old boy who was part of the procession fell off a truck and was crushed under its wheels.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon in Borjora village, Purakhasia situated between Dalu in West Garo Hills and Salmanpara in South West Garo Hills. The child who has been identified as Sachin Koch (10) was riding along with a group of children atop the truck carrying the idols of the goddess Durga for the immersion ceremony when he suddenly fell off and was crushed by the rear wheel of the truck.
The accident has been attributed to the lack of proper coordination and supervision by adults.
Similar scenes were witnessed in Tura during the immersion procession with hordes of young children standing atop trucks without any adult supervision.
