NEIGRIHMS director delivers lecture at AIIMS, Bhopal
SHILLONG: Director of NEIGRIHMS, Prof (Dr.) D. M. Thappa delivered the R V Rajam Oration on the subject, “Cutaneous Anthrax – Still A Reality in India” at the 59th annual meeting of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) at AIIMS, Bhopal. This oration was instituted in 1977 on the occasion of 80th birth celebration of Dr. R. V. Rajam. The oration is awarded to an eminent health scientist to deliberate on his or her research on a subject which has relevance to the health needs of the country with special reference to their pathophysiology, clinical or laboratory diagnosis and medical or surgical management at the individual or community level. Thappa is an eminent dermatologist of the country, who has authored many books on the subject. He is an author of iver six hundred national and international publications.
Committee demands repair of Babadam PWD road
TURA: The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) from Babadam has sought immediate repair of the PWD Road from Goeragre to Babadam market and threatened to hold a series of agitations if concerned authorities failED to comply. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the committee informed that two separate memoranda were submitted to North Tura MLA, Thomas A Sangma, in November last year and again in June this year, requesting him to facilitate repair of the road. Complaint letters were also submitted to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner in January and March this year. Despite the repeated complaints, the committee said that till date, there has neither been any intimation nor any action taken with regard to the matter. The committee also said that it was ready to mobilise the public and stage other forms of democratic agitations with their cooperation.
Baghmara celebrates World Food Day
TURA: World Food Day was celebrated on Wednesday in South Garo Hills at the District Agriculture Office premises in Baghmara on the theme, ‘Our Actions are our Future: Healthy Diets for Zero Hunger World’. Speaking on the occasion, EAC Reuben Momin stressed on the importance of eating good and healthy foods and urged upon the Agriculture and the allied departments like Horticulture, Veterinary and Fishery to support and educate the farmers about healthy farming practices. Project Director ATMA Baghmara, H Baumatary informed the gathering that nearly 40 million children aged between 5 and 19 years are malnourished so the programme is basically meant to promote awareness on action taken to defeat hunger by giving high quality nourishing foods to the people especially the growing children. Baghmara Food Safety Officer Ujjala M Marak said that unhealthy diet leads to diseases like obesity, diabetes and other cancerous illnesses.
Awareness on early marriage
NONGSTOIN: Childline Nongstoin Social Service Society, West Khasi Hills in collaboration with Seinduli – I Dorbar Shnong, organised a one-day awareness programme on early marriage and child rights in which various departments like District Child Protection Unit, West Khasi Hills, District Social Welfare and Health Department besides members of Childline Nongstoin and others participated. Speaking during the programme, B.Khain, District Child Protection Officer, sensitized the people about the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. M. Kharbhih, District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), Nongstoin, briefed the gathering about the effects of early marriages and urged the parents to refrain from early marriages. Others who spoke included C. Wahlang, Counsellor, CHC Riangdo and Adevnture Behphat, Centre Coordinator, Childline Nongstoin.
