SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya on Friday disposed of a petition pertaining to the performing of Puja in Nartiang temple.
The grievance in the petition filed under Article 226 of the Constitution, was against the illegal and arbitrary action of a faction in not accepting the public opinion for deciding the priest of Nartiang Durga Temple in terms of an order issued by the High Court in September 2018.
It has been claimed that there was no resolution during the public meeting held on September 21, 2018 to decide the next priest as the respondents had been repeatedly creating a situation of turmoil in the Nartiang village owing to the fact that they could not decide on a priest of their choice.
The counsel for the parties agreed that during the pendency of the petition, the dispute has been amicably settled between the parties and Oni Maskut Deshmukh whose family has been performing the ritual for 26 generations has been allowed to continue as the priest of Nartiang Durga Temple.
