SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Balajiedkupar Synrem has won the by-election to Shella Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) in Meghalaya by defeating his nearest rival, Independent candidate, Grace Mary Kharpuri by a margin of 6221 votes.
The winning candidate polled 12002 votes while his nearest rival polled only 5781 votes as per the poll results.
The by-election to Shella LAC which was necessitated following the demise of sitting MLA and Speaker of the Assembly Donkupar Roy. The by-election held on Monday recorded 84.56 per cent voters turnout.
The winner in the by-poll, Baljiedkupar Synrem is the son of Late Donkupar Roy.
There were six candidates in the fray — Balajiedkupar Synrem of UDP, Joshua Warjri of BJP, Mosjo Rockfeller Wanswett of PDF, Batyngshain Laitmon Ryngnga of Congress and the two Independents, Grace Mary Kharpuri and Komen Laitmon.
