SHILLONG: Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor has conducted six byelections since 2018. He said the difference this time was the green election in Shella.
The first one was a deferred election in Williamnagar in April last year following the killing of NCP candidate Jonathone Sangma.
The second was the bypoll in Ampati in May last year after the Congress candidate Mukul Sangma who contested and won both Ampati and Songsak decided to retain Songsak.
Later in August, simultaneous byolls were conducted for South Tura and Ranikor.
The by-election to South Tura was necessitated after Chief Minister Conrad Sangma resigned as MP for his entry into the Assembly and vacancy arose in Ranikor after the sitting MLA Martin Danggo resigned from the Congress to contest on NPP ticket.
The by-poll to Selsella seat was held in April this year following the death of sitting legislator Clement Marak.
