TURA: An FIR has been lodged against the Meghalaya Electrical Corporation Limited for the death of a youth from electrocution in Dadenggre region of West Garo Hills.
Former student leader Rupa M Marak filed the FIR against the sub divisional officer of the MeECL whose office is in charge of the Dadenggre region where the boy was killed on Thursday. Mingkam B Sangma was charred beyond recognition, caused by burns from the electrical current, after he fell off his bike and landed on a live tension wire lying by the side of the road at Dabigre village of Dadenggre. The FIR charged the MeECL with poor maintenance and implementation of electrical work which has led to frequent snapping of live wires with no protection in place for people passing through the area. “The death of a youth in electrocution isn’t the first time such an incident has occurred. There were two similar incidents in the recent past also,” pointed out Rupa Marak in his FIR. He mentioned the case of 11-year-old Pinang Ch Sangma who died from electrocution and his body charred with burns when he accidentally touched a snapped live wire in  2017.
The same year, an elderly woman identified as Jika Marak was also killed when a live wire snapped and fell on her in the Dadenggre region. ‘Three precious lives were lost due to the negligence of the department. The SDO of MeECL should be booked and put behind bars for his negligence which has cost human lives,’ demanded the former president of the GSU.
He alleged that frequent snapping of wires indicated poor implementation of work and the use of substandard materials by the department and the contractors.
