Legislator lays stone for LP school at Mawlynrei

SHILLONG: Meghalaya legislator — who represents Mawryngkneng Assembly Constituency — Deputy Chief Executive Member of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Pyniaid Sing Syiem and Mawlynrei Dorbar Shnong have come together to assist Jaiaw District Education Committee of the Presbyterian Church to establish a Rs 6-crore Mawlynrei Presbyterian Lower Primary School at Mawlynrei in the outskirt of Shillong.
Mawryngkneng MLA David Nongrum laid the foundation of the new school building in the presence of Syiem, who both vowed to see that the construction of the school building is completed at the earliest.
In his noble endeavour to improve the quality of education in Mawlynrei, the chief guest on the occasion, Nongrum announced that he will shell out an amount of Rs 4 lakh from the MLA scheme for fencing the school’s compound before the construction work starts.
He also assured the church and school authorities that he will sanction an amount of Rs 5 lakh every year from the MLA scheme.
He informed that the state government is implementing many educational schemes with funding from the Asian Development Bank, but these cannot be implemented in the state due to lack of spacious land. Nongrum also made an ardent appeal to provide more land to the church and school authorities, so that bigger projects can be implemented in the area.
Speaking on the occasion, KHADC Deputy CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem informed that Mawlynrei area was already in the priority area of the Council for improvement of education.
He also announced that he has sanctioned an amount of Rs 10 lakh for the construction of the new school building and Rs 40 crore from central funding to the council. Syiem also said that the cooperation of the lawmakers, church and school authorities and the Dorbar Shnong will usher faster development in the area.
Church leader FJ Mairom, who is the Education Secretary of Jaiaw District of the Presbyterian Church, informed that the district is taking care of the nine churches for the spiritual well-being of the faithful and the five schools under its care are being taken as its ‘mission’ for human development.
He informed that the construction of the first phase of the school building will commence immediately and the total cost for construction is estimated at Rs 6 crore when completed.
The Mawlynrei Dorbar Shnong has gifted land measuring 20,000 square feet to the Church and the school authorities for the establishment of the school.
