Course for college, varsity teachers commences in NEHU
SHILLONG: A two-week ‘Refresher Course’ for college and university teachers jointly organised by the UGC Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) and Khasi Department of NEHU was inaugurated on Monday in the Non-Science Cluster Classroom, NEHU. Head Department of Khasi A Kharmalki presided over the inaugural function where the Executive Member, KHADC, Paul Lyngdoh, was the chief guest. In his inaugural speech, Lyngdoh expressed his happiness and mentioned that organising of such programmes is very important for college and university teachers. He was impressed to see the participants attending the refresher course in NEHU from remote colleges of the state. He also emphasised on the inter-relationship between language and identity. He reiterated that in order to preserve identity, one needs to honour one’s language, motherland and clan system. While lauding at the richness of Khasi oral literature, he also stressed on the need of developing Khasi literature. Rakesh Mohan, Director UGC, HRDC, spoke on the importance of Refresher Course in general for career advancement of the faculty members, Marbhador M Khymdeit, Course coordinator, welcomed the participants and introduced the theme of the refresher course. The inaugural function concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. B Bairo.
RKM vice-prez to visit today
SHILLONG: The vice-president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, Head Quarters, Belur Math, Swami Shivamayanandaji Maharaj, will visit the city on Tuesday and inaugurate a new ultrasound machine at Ramakrishna Mission Charitable Dispensary in Laitumkhrah. The inauguration will take place on Wednesday along with Governor Tathagata Roy. During his stay, Maharaj will also impart ‘diksha’ (giving of a mantra or an initiation by the guru) to interested devotees on November 14 and 15. After Shillong, he will visit to Ramakrishna Mission in Shella on Saturday.
College forms alumni body
SHILLONG: The Sohra Government College Alumni Association was constituted on Saturday in a meeting presided by G Syrpailang Kharwanlang, lecturer (Economics) and member secretary of the alumni committee.
Kharwanlang welcomed the members and presented the constitution of the association. College Principal AL Lyngdoh lauded the members for responding to the invitation. She also said that the alumni association is a pillar which can strengthen the institution. The meeting elected Rex Danny Syiemlieh as president, Milky Way Bynnud as vice-president, Demingstar Larmgap as general secretary, Shemphang Synrem as joint secretary and Insurance Diengdoh as finance secretary. Office bearers and the executive members were also appointed during the meeting.

Legal Services Day organised
SHILLONG: The District Legal Services Authority, East Khasi Hills District, organised the Legal Services Day on the Saturday at Mawsynram C&RD Block. The programme was chaired by I Shangpliang, Para-Legal Volunteer, who informed the gathering on his work as a Para-Legal Volunteer. The programme was attended by local residents and school students. The Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority DS Marbaniang, during his speech, had highlighted the significance of the day and has also laid stress on the role of the Para-Legal Volunteer in addressing the problems of the masses in consonance with Article 39 A of the Constitution of India. The other resource person who spoke were P Yadav and Iarisa Phawa (panel advocates), who spoke about the rights of accused persons, the POCSO Act, NDPS and other legal aspects. An interactive session was also held with the participants who enquired about the role of PLVs and the objectives. Post session, many participants came forward to volunteer themselves as PLVs.
Cultural evening in NEHU
SHILLONG: A get together-cum-cultural evening on the theme ‘Unity in Diversity’ was organised by the Non-Teaching Residential Community at Multi-Use Convention Hall, NEHU on Saturday. Teibor Pathaw, Local MDC, Mawlai, was the chief guest on the occasion and MB Tongper, ADM, East Khasi Hills, was the guest of honour along with special invitees Wandondor R Synrem, President, NEHUNSA, LMK Lyngrah, Finance Officer, NEHU, Jay Narayan Nayak, Registrar, NEHU. The programme aimed at encouraging the employees and their family members for cluster cleanliness, academic excellence and extraordinary achievements in sports, music, dance and other activities. Moreover, prizes were distributed to children of the employees who excel in their academics and other extra-curricular activities. Awards and appreciation prizes were also given to the residents for cleanliness in cluster quarters and involvement in the social work amongst the community.
Villager stabs another in WKH
NONGSTOIN: Diel Rina (25) of Mawlieh Laitdom village in Mairang under West Khasi Hills was arrested for stabbing Arjun Wahlang (33) from the same village as a result of which the victim sustained serious injuries. Source informed that the incident occurred on Friday around 8 pm. The victim was rushed to Mairang Civil Hospital for treatment. The family members of Arjun have lodged an FIR at Mairang Police Station and subsequently, the cops have arrested the accused. A case has been register under section 325 IPC and interrogation was still under way to find out the reason for committing the crime.
